Letter 19
Friday 30.08.13 65 km
Ino's place where I stayed for the night is fine in many ways. They have wi-fi,
there's a shower, there's a kitchen, hot water for the tea, people to talk with.
The only thing I miss is aircon. It was hot this night - too hot.
Outside it's raining. It's been raining ever since I went to the supermarket
last night. It was huge. So huge that I went looking for a new mug. I find it
soon. But a filter for the tea, that's worse. The tea I bought is too lousy.
It's irritating with all the stuff that stays on the surface when it should sink
down to the bottom.
After a long hunt I succeed. A filter that fits the mug. Perfect!
This morning I change plans a couple of times. At first I thought of going to
a kind of outdoor museum with old buildings 1o km away. Then I gave it up
because of the rain, but now at 9am it doesn't rain that much and the landlady
says I just have to follow the bicycle track that runs not far on the other side
of the main street. It will take me there.
A whole scool it seemed was going
somewhere
Once more I'm stupid not to ask more detailed about it. I'm allowed to put my
luggage at the hostel until noon and go for it. It's a hopeless trip, this
bicycle track. Now I waste the whole morning going on a bicycle track. 10 km I
follow it, just to be sure something's wrong. When I ask in a Seicomart where
they even have a map, I realize I won't make it. Anyway I'd only had an hour
there.
Now I give up. There's a light drizzle from time to time but nothing much. I
find my way back - that gives me problems too because where did I join the track?
I was sure to remember - and I find it at last.
So, I load the bike and says goodbye: Sayonara, the "r" pronounced more like a "l".
You need a lot of patience to pass through a city like Sapporo with all those
traffic lights. They annoy me really! I only have to go to Otaru - 37 km
according to the map. There's another hostel there and my landlady has made a
reservation for me. Then I hope to be able to do the entire Shakotan penninsula
along the coast the day after. The wheather ought to be better tomorrow.
Going through Sapporo
It's not a pretty part. Sapporo continues forever along the main road arm. There
are some inclines that doesn't look much, but are. Then the road disappears up
into the country? But only to make a big turn and go back up a mountain. It
keeps saying Otaru Sta. I think for more than 10 km. The last two times there's
only 2 km left?
I find my hostel and there's wi-fi.
